A Little History of Holly B's Bakery

Holly B began baking when she was 13 years old in Seattle, with her friend Sarah Spaeth. Rising at 5am, Holly and Sarah baked 60 loaves of bread every Sunday, in the 1930s Westinghouse oven at Holly's home. They supplied neighbors with freshly baked bread, delivering the loaves door to door and taking the next weeks' orders.

Over the years, Holly continued to bake for family and friends, experimenting a lot along the way.

In the mid-1970's, Holly and her husband Andre discovered Lopez and fell in love with the island. In 1976, Holly began baking in the tiny loft and bakery space at the Richardson Store on Lopez. built in 1890, selling a modest selection of breads and treats to islanders, boaters and bicyclists.

In 1978, Holly began renting a space in Lopez Village and expanded her bakery to include many more delicious baked goods. Holly and Andre were the first bakery employees, doing everything from baking, dishwashing, greeting customers, washing floors and driving to Seattle for supplies. Over the years, many islanders have worked tirelessly with us to create a thriving and warm bakery.

In 1981, Holly and Andre had their first son, Ty, soon to be followed by twin sons Rom and Galen in 1983. The boys were a part of the bakery from the very beginning, playing with dough when they were young, then learning how to clean, bake and take care of customers as they grew older.

Now, in 2011, Ty is one of our head bakers, and Rom and Galen visit frequently, freely offering quality control!
